Blog setup

As a common practice, the first post on this blog is about the setup of the blog itself.

  1. The blog is built using Hugo.

There is no strict reason to pick Hugo over Jekyll or other static site generators. I prefer the selection of free Hugo themes, and the Go language behind the hood.

  1. The theme is Congo.

I like the overall design with sane defaults, the code blocks look well-balanced with the main text.

Other theme candidates I checked:

  • Hextra - very nice theme with balanced CSS. Runner-up for me.
  • Hugo Coder - nice but somewhat too minimalistic and black-ish.
  • Bear Blog - a super lightweight theme, yet looking very nice.
  • PaperMod - a very popular theme, but I like the blocky design less.
  1. The blog is hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

I used Github Pages before, but wanted to try Cloudflare Pages. The setup is very straightforward, the free tier is very gracious, and many features are available in one click if you use the Cloudflare dashboard for managing your domain.
